Measuring AI visibility: which signals count

You cannot measure every AI answer, but you can measure the signals that cause them. These are the ones that count.

Why measure signals, not just answers

AI answers are generated live and hard to track fully, so measuring only outcomes gives a blurry picture. Instead, measure the inputs that drive citations: whether AI can reach your pages, how quotable they are, and how trustworthy your site looks. These signals are stable, controllable and predictive of AI visibility.

Signals give you a number to improve week over week, long before any single answer is traceable.

The signals that count

Six signals matter most: AI-crawler access in robots.txt, content available in server-rendered HTML, answer-first structure under headings, clear structured data, entity clarity so your brand is unambiguous, and authority through mentions and links. Together they decide whether a model can find, read, trust and quote you.

How to track them over time

Run a scan to get a baseline AI-visibility score, fix the flagged issues, then re-scan on a schedule so you can see the trend. Pair that with AI referral traffic in analytics for the outcome side. A rising signal score plus rising AI referrals is the clearest proof your work is landing.

Doing it once tells you where you are, doing it regularly tells you if you are improving. Monitoring beats a single audit.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official AI visibility metric?
Not yet. There is no agreed industry score, so the practical approach is to measure the on-page signals that drive citations and track them over time against your own baseline.
What tool measures these signals?
Our free scan grades AI-visibility signals such as AI-crawler access, answer-first structure and structured data, as one of four subscores alongside speed, security and SEO.
How often should I re-check?
Monthly is a sensible rhythm for most sites, or after any significant change to content, robots.txt or rendering. Continuous monitoring is better if AI visibility is a priority.
